New look and features for PhilippineCompanies.com

At over 10,000 visitors/day PhilippineCompanies.com is now one of the top 1000 websites in the Philippines. This coincides as well with the site surpassing 50,000 companies listed in its database. In our continuing effort to improve the website, the following changes have recently gone live:

PhilippineCompanies.com has moved to our Cloud-based Virtual Private Servers which would allow us to scale more easily as the site continues to grow. The upgrade should significantly increase the website loading time as well.
The site has been redesigned to what we think is a cleaner and sleeker look.
A new section that has gone live but still under constant improvement and development is the Stock Market section of the site. This area provides links to stock information and news for Publicly Traded Philippine Companies.
Visitors can now download the PhilippineCompanies Toolbar to have faster access to the PhilippineCompanies search engine.

Expect several other new features in the next few weeks!

Philippine Property Finder goes Live Beta

Philippine Property Finder is finally going on live beta testing this week after months in ‘development limbo’. The website offers some interesting features such as:

Map-based searching – The visitor can use a Google Maps-based interactive map of the Philippines to check for property listing in various locations. For example clicking Ayala Avenue, Makati in the Map will yield this search result.
Web-crawler – PhilippinePropertyFinder.com is essentially a real estate search engine much like what Google is to the web as a whole. It returns results from some of the top Philippine real estate property listing sites and redirects its visitors to the original websites where the actual property advertisement was posted. To date, it has crawled over 130,000 property listings.
Featured Properties – The site also offers the option to post directly into its database for free. Property postings direct to the website are allowed rich html content as well uploading of up to three images. Functionality of this feature is patterned after Craigslist’s, no membership required posting system.
Property Statistics – Perhaps the most exciting feature of PhilippinePropertyFinder.com is its capability to generate statistical data on real estate prices and trends by analyzing the data it has collected. This data is summarized in here: http://www.philippinepropertyfinder.com/statistics. Individual search results are also provided statistical data such as average selling price, average floor area, average rental rates and average rental area for the location being searched. This gives the user a better idea on the prices he/she expects to pay in renting or purchasing property in a specific location. Celebrating its 8th year on-line, ImagesPHILIPPINES.com is now offering alternate search options for people looking for Philippine pictures, photographs and artworks. Going live this week is an option to search for photographs of and about the Philippines from Flickr.com and Google Images. The option is available by clicking the alternate search options links on the upper left of the search results webpage.

Seen to complement the over 5,300 images from our over 130 contributors that are available for licensing in the website, the Flickr and Google search options effectively puts an unlimited number of photographs accessible to the thousands of monthly visitors of imagesphilippines.com.

On selecting, projecting, and choice collecting

Private Collections is the first book project of Artes de las Filipinas under EACOMM Corporation. The collection will be available in bookstores by December.

I don’t know the first thing about starting a purposeful collection. In another lifetime, I remember trying to out-hoard my kindergarten classmates in the savage world of sticker collecting… where we engaged in trade-offs and cemented deals that put even the most hardened hoodlums to shame. And that was it. These days, the only things I seem to be collecting are the dust settling on my mounds of unread reading matter. Which is why, in the near future, I’d actually like to start a collection of my own, and I mean a real collection — not just a random pile of objects, but a specialized and distinct pile of objects. In all honesty, I would love nothing more than to start off my grand collection with the acquisition of mind-blowing artworks from the great Filipino artists of our time. But since I’m not quite ready to give up any of my limbs just yet, I guess I can live with simply admiring those works from afar. Or up close, if you’ve managed to grab a copy of Christiane de la Paz’s book, Private Collections.

I’m being direct to the point when I say that this book is not for the faint of mind… or muscle, for that matter. Yes, the book is heavier than your average bowling ball, and yes, rupturing your spine whilst lugging it around is a possibility (if you don’t have proper motor function, perhaps). But for the impressive content of 1,111 artworks drawn from the art collections of 30 Filipino art collectors, coupled with insightful essays about their personalities and lives, their philosophies and tastes, their methods and reasons for collecting — not to mention the beautiful photographs of the artworks — you can forgive the book for being so darn heavy (and for being a bit on the pricey side as well).

Personally, I actually enjoyed Private Collections. Aside from the thoughtful organization of the art collectors according to who was at the start, middle and end of his or her collecting career, it was pleasantly surprising to see that the featured collections were not limited to the realm of “high art.” I was expecting the book to be loaded with stereotypical collections of the affluent upper class: traditional paintings, musty wooden sculptures, the erstwhile commissioned portrait… Well, all I can say is that De la Paz did a good job in selecting her featured collectors. The diversity is something to be applauded, and shamelessly envied, if I do say so myself. However, that’s another thing I admire about Private Collections — it isn’t pretentious. The book is a study and a labor of love on collecting, private collectors and private collections. It doesn’t presume to pass judgment on the tastes of these art connoisseurs, it merely seeks to share the stories behind these personas and their treasures, while providing valuable insight about our talented Filipino artists along the way. Nor does the book try to incite shameless envy, either. (Maybe that’s just me — darn those beautiful artworks!)

What it all boils down to is just as Francis Bacon once said: “Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested.” In the case of Private Collections, I suggest a preliminary taste of what it has to offer; maybe a quick flip through the pages to get a feel of what you’re getting into first. Only then may you proceed to heartily devour it. I guarantee three kilos of an appetizing read!

Artes de las Filipinas: Private Collections Book Launch on October 20, 2009
